Shanben Chen (S.B. Chen or Shan-Ben Chen) received his B.S. degree in industry automation from Dalian Railway Institute (Dalian Jiao Tong University) in 1982, and received his M.S. and Ph.D. degree in control theory and application from Harbin Institute of Technology, P. R. China, in 1987 and 1991 respectively. He worked as postdoctoral fellow at The National Key Laboratory of Advanced Welding Production of China in Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT) from 1993 to 1995, as professor and supervisor for doctoral candidates from 1995 to 2000, at HIT. From Apr. 2000 to present, he has been awarded the Special Professor position, Cheung Kong Scholar Program* of Ministry of Education of P. R. China & Li Ka Shing Foundation, Hong Kong, and engaged in Shanghai Jiao Tong University, P. R. China. Prof. Chen was engaged as the visiting professor of University of Western Sydney (UWS) for ARC Linkage collaboration in Jun., 2009. He is currently the director of Intellgentized Robotic Welding Technology Laboratory, School of Material Science and Engineering, Shanghai Jiao Tong University. 
Prof. Chen is currently a Senior member of IEEE; A member of America Welding Society; Chair of Robotics & Automation Committee of Chinese Welding Society (CWS); Deputy Secretary-General of Chinese Welding Society; Standing member of board of directors, CWS; and other academic positions.
Prof. Chen’s research interests include intelligentized welding manufacturing, intelligentized technologies for welding robot, intelligent control of welding dynamical  process, modeling and control of complex systems, robust control of uncertain systems, and relevant ranging in welding automation and advanced welding manufacturing.
Prof. Chen is the author or co-author of 10 academic books and more than 300 magazine papers. His main papers were published in IEEE Trans.  Automatic Control, IEEE Trans. Systems, Man and Cybernetics,Welding Journal, J. of Intelligent & Robotic Systems, Int. J. of System Sciences and other primary international academic magazines. Prof. Chen has been charged with more than 40 research projects from National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and other chinese national scientific and technology program, he has hold more than 30 National invent patents of China in the field of information sensing, modeling and intelligent control of robotic welding Process. Prof. Chen has received 8 main scientific and technological awards authorized by National Scienses and Technology Ministry or other Ministry of China.

4. Received Science & Technology Awards

• First grade award of 2008’ Science and Technology of Chinese Mechanical Industry, titled “ Key technologies and applications of intelligentized robotic welding,”  granted by Chinese Mechanical Industry Association and Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society, Prof. Chen is the first principal and contributor of the awarded project.
• Second grade award of 2008’ Shanghai Science and Technology Progress, titled “ The local- surroundings autonomous intelligent welding robot and systems,” granted by Science and Technology Committee of Shanghai Government, P. R. China, the first principal and contributor.
• Second grade award of 2004’ National Science and Technology Progress, titled “ Intelligent control technologies for spacial seam quality of robotic welding and system realization,” granted by State Department of People’s Republic of China, the second principal and contributor.

(* Remarks: The Cheung Kong Scholar Program is to award those young scientists who have made outstanding academic contributions in relevant scientific field, in every year from 1998, about thousands applicants from all over the world are applying for the Cheung Kong Scholar Program and only about one hundred persons are authorized by Ministry of Education of  P. R. China & Li Ka Shing Foundation, Hong Kong. The Cheung Kong Scholar Program is the highest academic contribution prize in Ministry of Education of P. R. China). Up till now, Prof. Chen still is only person authorized in the Cheung Kong Scholar Program among the welding field scientists of China.
• In 2001, Prof. Chen was awarded “Chinese Outstanding Postdoctoral Fellow Prize”, granted by National Personnel Ministry of P.R. China and Postdoctoral Science Foundation Committee of China, Prof. Chen was one of ten awarded persons in China this year. This prize is the highest academic contribution award authorized by Postdoctoral Science Foundation Committee of China since the postdoctoral system had been established in China from 1985.

5. Preside and hold the academic conferences
