Research question

How can the surface left by belt grinding be linked to subsequent hardening burnishing to predict final roughness in Inconel 718?

Method

An integrated robotic grinding–burnishing platform models ground surfaces from abrasive condition and material removal rate. Cavity-expansion and Hertzian-contact models then describe the transition to hardening burnishing and the resulting surface profile.

Main findings

Inconel 718 tests showed that belt grit size, wear, burnishing force and step-over jointly affect final roughness. The hardening-burnishing model was validated above the applicable critical step-over, supporting coordinated selection of grinding and burnishing parameters.
